Professionalism is presenting yourself in a more than ordinary yet respectable way. To be professional does not necessarily mean being skilled in an occupation. Those that develop and that have mastered professionalism can handle any situation good or bad, not necessarily with ease, but without letting anyone know the challenge at hand. This means everything has to fit and you have to be clean. Obviously not revealing or skin tight, this is something that will alter perception, which is something to stay away from. You should never be busting out of your blouse, buttons popping, and thread barely holding on. If tailoring is needed, so be it. We are not all the same width and length. Also Ironing is important, raggedy and wrinkled is not a good look, on any occasion. There are two different styles that are considered professional. Once again, depends on where you are. There is a time and place for everything. The attire ranges from business casual to formal in the workplace. On the more casual side of the spectrum: black slacks, a blouse that has an appropriate neck line and covers shoulders with a simple flat shoe does the trick. And when it comes to business attire black suit (with or without blazer), pants or skirt, with a button up or blouse, with heels is definitely suitable. Note, that attire also includes make-up, jewelry, and hygiene. Make-up should be subtle, or on the more conservative side. Being professional does not include crazy amounts of caked on make up: blue eye shadow, fake eyelashes, and hot pink lipstick. Your vocabulary, communication, and manners are everything. You may look the part, but then you open your mouth and every other word includes strong swearing words. I am not sure how far you will get with the mouth of a sailor. When it comes to word choice be anything but ordinary. Make those average sentences extraordinary, make sure you use words that will get a reaction. Professional lingo can help sell what you are trying to say. And make sure what you are saying is getting said effectively. Be clear, straight forward, to the point. Easier it is to understand you, the easier it is to listen. Also, be open and prepared for questions. Share your skill and know-how. And when it comes to other, be respectful. Make sure you acknowledge others work, stay humble. Giving yourself all the praise and being cocky is not a good look, total professional turn off. Of course mind your “thank you’s,” you are not in the position you are in due to your work and your work
