The progression of the pharmacist has been applying more duties throughout their roles to help our society grow in a better state of health. For instance, most individuals think pharmacist just fills out a prescription and give it to their patients, but there is more than what they encounter. According to DPE Research (2016), the number of pharmacists in the U.S. has increased about 13.7 percent since 2005. There is an increase in demand in the career of the pharmacist because there are much variety of roles that pharmacist plays in our society. For starter, many pharmacists must know most modern medicine to provide instruction and information to their patients. If the patients do not know what he or she is taking, the pharmacist needs to advise them on how, what, and why this medicine is used for. According to an academic journal called, “Health literacy in pharmacy” a team of researchers wanted to find out if the pharmacist can help their patient requests and their results stated, “Pharmacists should be aware of appropriate means to educate that patient. This includes the use of both education aids and oral counseling methods to achieve the best outcomes” (Tkacz, et al. 980). In other words, most patients need someone to take the time to thoroughly explain each medication with their consent. Therefore, when the pharmacist educates their patients to understand what medicines they are using. It allows their patient to comprehend and ask for any question if need assistance. By letting pharmacist answer the patient questions, it allows the patient to fully understand their problems and helps find solutions to their needs. With all these kinds of programs, it allows a pharmacist to do roles like CPR and other things related to emergency situations where they can save a human’s life. However, the con of having these kinds of certification is that pharmacist role does not require them to use it in their daily routine except for First Aid and BLS. According to an academic journal called, “Pharmacist helps save a life at O’Hare” there was a woman named Amber Lucas, who help a pilot regain consciousness with her certification of ACLS before the police and emergency medical services came to the scene. Dr. Lucas stated, “They thought I was a nurse; somebody else thought I was a doctor. And I clarified; I said, ‘My formal name is Dr. Lucas. I have a doctor of pharmacy degree. But I am a pharmacist’” (Traynor 940). Therefore, it not requires for a pharmacist to have a certification in ACLS, but it will be always helpful if there is a case of emergency.
