In the 1920s many things happened that helped influence what America is today. With world war one recently ending and thousands of immigrants from surrounding areas flooding into the United States, things happened that shaped how America would continue to run. Two of the big things that happened during this time period was prohibition and lots of racial conflict. This period would become known as the “Roaring Twenties.”
A huge thing that happened during this time period was immigration. The United States had been built by immigrants and had been accepting immigrants for a long time. This amendment outlawed the sale, manufacturing, and transporting of all alcohol in the United States. There were many contributing factors that made the 18th amendment an amendment against alcohol. Alcohol was everywhere. One of the supporting arguments that had been made was that alcohol made factory workers lazy. If you have a lazy factory worker then it's hard to make products and when there's no product, there's no money. In the west they not only saw it as a downfall in the factory, but as something that contributed to spousal abuse. Husbands would go out to drink and after coming home all drunk would end up in arguments with their wives. In a drunken rage the husband would get upset and beat his wife all because of the alcohol in their system.
In the end the 18th amendment only made the fight against alcohol worse. Instead of people following the amendment, they pushed against it hard. People would make there own alcohol called moonshine and hide it from the police so they could sell it to make their own profit. They would run it to anyone who wanted to pay for it. These people were called bootleggers and some of them were controlled by the mob itself. Because of this gang wars broke out all over big cities in the United States including New York and Chicago. Gangs wanted more turf than others so they would kill gangs in the territory they
