Bacteria are a part of the many prokaryotes of this world and can be found anywhere and can thrive in various environments. There are good and bad bacteria in our body such as in our GI tracts and our immune system. Bad bacteria on the other hand can be pathogenic and dangerous to us humans. These are called diseases and they can severely be life threatening in many situations. There are many forms of bacteria and they can be classified in many ways. This is an example of a very common bacteria that is found in the body’s normal flora. Staphylococcus was discovered in 1880 by a general surgeon that was performing surgery, and the scientific name Staphylococcus Aureus was then named by Friedrich Julius Rosenbach. The world is full of this pathogen and is transferred throughout the environment in a lot of ways. It can be spread by skin to skin contact with a person that has an exposed infected area with pus. Staphylococcus Aureus is a Gram-Positive bacterium that can be stained by a crystal violent stain. The best way to grow this bacterium would be on a form of blood agar, since they thrive in the human body. It is not always classified as pathogenic due to the fact that it is very commonly found in the nose, skin, and upper respiratory tract. On the other hand, S. Aureus can cause sickness of humans such as respiratory infections and many infections on the skin. The incubation period for Staphylococcus Aureus is only between 1-6 hours in the correct environment. Its morphology is a cocci shape with clusters of round cells aligned in a string much like grapes and is a complete facultative anaerobe. S. Aureus cells thrive in high amounts of salt, they can even tolerate up to 10% of salt. This probably explains they ability to withstand the salty environments on human skin. These result in reddish brownish bumps on the skin that are often filled with pus. These can appear anywhere on the body such as your face and extremities. This even causes lymph nodes under the skin to become swollen which can cause a reddish discoloration of the skin, this is called erysipelas and can be fatal if not treated in time. The way that S. Aureus attacks the body is that it can penetrate the skin by cuts or scrapes. Impetigo is highly contagious and can really come with chronic side effects. Folliculitis on the other hand is an infection of the hair follicle of human skin. This happens when the base of the hair follicle becomes inflamed and pus starts to form at the base of the pore. Infection spreads to the surrounding tissues leading to raised red bumps similar to acne. In addition, endocarditis is another bacterial infection that Staphylococcus Aureus can cause. This disease is found in the lower respiratory system and results in inflammation of the inner walls of the heart. Symptoms can include fever and shortness of breath.
