Morgan February 14, 2024 Wes Moore Research Essay Nearly 3 out of 10 children in the United States do not live with their biological father, and for African-Americans the figure is closer to 6 in 10. Regardless of living arrangements, positive involvement by fathers is associated with better outcomes for children in academic achievement, social and emotional well-being, and behavior. Yet society is still catching up with how best to nurture those kinds of relationships. A growing number of communities are starting to reform child support systems to make room for a broader concept of fatherhood. This statement ties in with the book The Other Wes Moore because two kids named Wes Moore both grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods and had difficult childhoods. Without a father as a kid, you're not going to have a role model to look up to and learn how to respect and treat others and won't get another perspective on learning how to deal with the world from another parent. For example, kids don't know what to turn to when they're feeling stressed because without a father figure to teach them how to deal with stress, it gets added onto everyone in the family.
