In a Brave New World, readers will be introduced to a story that can be described as a futuristic story of a controlled society that has no choice on what they want, but rely on drugs, mainly Soma which was introduced by scientists. This story shows the dangers of drugs used to control mental illnesses and modify other human parts of the body. Brave New World, a story written by Aldous Huxley, examines a futuristic society in which scientists use drugs to lead people to a comfortable life which controls emotions and forgets all your struggles to have a worry free life. The Author claims that this “Utopian novel” explains a silent important message. “One of the most salient messages of Brave New World is the alarm raised by Huxley against the dangers of technology.” (huxley). Huxley believes that this story is a message telling us readers to be careful during these times. Technology is advancing fast and so is science. As time passes by, the world develops and the use of drugs grows even more every day. The “silent message” is significant because it ties the story’s meaning together. According to the author, he describes Soma as “one of the most powerful instruments of rule in the dictator’s army.” (Huxley). The description from the author clarifies why the characters have to fight for their freedom and break the addiction.For example, the main protagonist in the Brave new world, a unique individual in this new society named Bernard Marx. It quotes “He was ashamed of his jealousy and alternately made efforts of will and took soma to keep himself from feeling it. But the efforts were not very successful; and between the soma-holidays there were, of necessity, intervals. The odious sentiment kept on returning.” In regard to this, there are other characters who play a role in this struggle of Soma and think critically for themselves. Characters in the story Henry foster and Lenina Crowne have used soma as a recreational drug, though Soma gives you pleasure the true meaning of it which is avoiding reality or escapism. “Swallowing half an hour before closing time, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds.” This Quote is important because it follows the use of Soma and how addictive it is. Thus showing us how the characters knowing soma is bad
