Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a biography that tells the tale of young Louis Zamperini, who became a prisoner of war during World War 2 and survived to tell his tale. As a prisoner of war, Louis was almost forced into doing propaganda for the Japanese, who were holding him captive. Propaganda is defined as the “information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etcetera (Dictionary.com).” Propaganda played a crucial role during World War 2, with many countries using them to display many different messages, sometimes using influential figures similar to Louis. Widely spread throughout the war, propaganda was used in many different ways and for many different reasons.
Propaganda was utilized throughout American history to shape citizens' views and encourage them to retaliate against a country with differing beliefs. Propaganda would be shown through posters, newspapers, comics, cartoons, etc. The United States would use scare tactics toward Americans. They would broadcast or illustrate what the world would look like if communist rulings were to engulf America and other vulnerable countries. Posters would show American flags going up in flames.

Donna Woolfolk Cross posits that being informed about the many forms of propaganda is important for everyone living in a democratic society. She backs up her argument by pointing out the common misconceptions about propaganda, such as the reality that even though most people are against propaganda, they are likely not to understand some of the more common applications of propaganda. Cross suggests that, because of this misunderstanding, many of those who are against propaganda may be fooled by it frequently. This nation-wide manipulation occurs every day, and if a democratic system is to ever represent the whole of a population, instead of just a fraction’s manipulations, then it is essential that individuals learn how to detect and deal with propaganda. Cross offers up several points of advice for people in regards to handling propaganda.

One variable that echoed throughout America was propaganda. Propaganda was a major influence in the rally for overall support in America during World War II. The propaganda’s intentions in World War II can be broken down into three major categories: war efforts, Anti-German and Anti-Japanese backing, and homefront endeavors.

Propaganda is used by the World State from the novel “Brave New World” and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party. Propaganda is a way of persuading the masses for a certain organization or movement. It is a form of mind control and works on the fears and desires of the audience. The three forms of propaganda that the World State and Adolf Hitler, the Nazi Party, use are the following. Bandwagon, convincing the audience to take advantage of the offer before it is too late.
“To be a leader means to be able to move masses” (Adolf Hitler). The quote epitomizes both the Nazi party in Germany and the World State in the novel ‘Brave New World’. The Nazi’s and World state exercised propaganda to gain dictatorship and control over their people. It is not difficult for one man or society to dictate millions with the help of advanced technology and propaganda techniques. The propaganda techniques like card stacking, glittering generalities, and plain folks are used in the propaganda of the Nazi party(Adolf Hitler) and the World State .
What is propaganda? Well, the definition of propaganda has been debated, for there are many different viewpoints on it. However, it is usually defined as any type of material used in hopes of influencing a community’s thoughts and viewpoints towards one subject. Many different types of propaganda were used in World War I successfully since people only received the information that the government wanted them to know. It twisted the truth and allowed for governmental control of people’s thoughts and viewpoints towards the war.

Since “propaganda defines the construction, maintenance and use of history and perceptions by the powerful” (Csete, 2000, p 212) propaganda continuously is changing and adapting to the fluctuating social norms; however, the 20th century was a pivoting point. This century was when we were able to see the African minority revolt and fight back. To this day the propaganda from the early 1900’s has created marches, social movements, and riots that still affect them today.
Propaganda has been used in history and modern day to persuade or present information to people that might be true or false depending on the view of the person. The definition of propaganda is ideas, information, and other material made to win people over to a doctrine. Propaganda is important to any totalitarian regime, to show the population that their condition is completely normal and hide the truth from the people. Nazis had used propaganda and manipulated the German people with their deception and false promises. Propaganda did not just appear everywhere with no help; Joseph Goebbels was the minister of propaganda under Adolf Hitler.
A leading 19th century psychologist named William James stated this about propaganda: "There's nothing so absurd that if you repeat it often enough, people will believe it”. Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. This is evident in the televised premature ending of the Montag’s chase and in the symbolism of 451 by the government in Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451. However, in our world propaganda has been used to unite a country through targeted mass persuasion. This is seen in two classic U.S propaganda posters that encourage U.S citizens to join the army: “I want you”(index 1) and “Remember Dec. 7th” (index 2).
In my piece of propaganda, I am using a shoe company, which I created and I used a famous athlete to endorse it the shoe. I used the propaganda technique “testimonial”, which is basically using any famous person to endorse a product. I chose this because it seems to be the best type of propaganda to sell something. I also used another propaganda technique in my slogan, “To Be The Best… You Gotta Wear The BEST”. The type of propaganda being used is “Glittering Generalities”, which is using a word with a positive connotation to make people think highly of it.
