Bad Idea for the Raiders
Imagine the Chicago Cubs being moved to Indianapolis. Imagine Marshall’s Thundering Herd relocating to Ohio State. Every sports team has been set in tradition. Traditions are not made to be broken. The Oakland Raiders are Oakland based. The talk about relocating the Raiders may have a negative outcome if it falls through. It is not a good idea to relocate the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas because they could lose fans, they would possibly have to change their name, and the city has the means to build a new stadium. It would be difficult for the local fans to travel out of state every game. They would be commuting nine hour to see their team play at a home game. Oakland is a major West Coast port city in the U.S. state of California. Port cities have an increased revenue. Oakland is the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, the eighth-largest city in California, and the 45th-largest city in the U.S. with a population of 413,775 as of 2014. With a population like that, there has to be enough money from everyone’s taxes along with donations from the athletes to build a stadium. The owner of the team is not broke. He, alone, could afford a new stadium. The Mayor of Oakland has been interviewed on the news saying that the city Oakland has no problem supporting the Oakland Raiders with building a new stadium to stay in Oakland. The mayor of Oakland has openly said the city was willing to help for the community, fans worldwide that don’t want the team to move. Industry experts estimate that more than $7 billion will be spent on new facilities for professional sports teams before 2006. Most of this $7 billion will come from public sources. The subsidy starts with the federal government, which allows state and local governments to issue tax-exempt bonds to help finance sports facilities. Tax exemption lowers interest on debt and so reduces the amount that cities and teams must pay for a stadium. If the city and NFL players came together Oakland could have a new stadium instead of
