College: A great investment The decision of going to college or not is a big decision every person has to make. There are both pros and cons of both sides. Teachers encourage students to go to college throughout K-12 and it is something that everyone has heard. Students never really hear from people that did not attend college because every person in a school had to get a degree in order to work there. The other side of the push for attending college is that it is not for everyone. Both of these sides bring up a good case, but the new liberal arts make a great case for college. One being that the liberal arts degree is no longer affordable for people (Ungar 227). Even if people are able to afford to get the degree, people complain of it being hard to find a job that wants to hire someone with a liberal arts degree. This may be the reason people no longer feel the need for liberal arts because they are not very popular in jobs. This is not the case though, people should have liberal arts for the human aspect of it. Liberal arts are what make people have better social skills. It is not a bad thing to have for any job because even though it may not be a requirement, it is something that makes people become a better worker (Ungar 228). Another misperception of the liberal arts is that people should not just study in liberal arts. People should focus more on other degrees such as mathematics, science, technology, and engineering (Ungar 229). These degrees are the ones that more and more employers are looking for in applicants. The question that comes up though is why not just be a minor in liberal arts in and major in one of the bigger degrees?
