Bobbi Leder, an opinion editor, spoke her thoughts in her article, “Should People Be Required to Obtain A License Before Becoming Parents,” where she addresses what is required and expected out of parenthood. She advocates that “children deserve the best and if you’re not prepared to give (the most important job) your all, then leave it to those who are” (Leder 3). Teen Mom is a show all about young girls getting pregnant as teenagers. Many of the girls are between the ages of 16 and 18, so they are still children themselves. Hovering refers to the parenting practice of being overinvolved in your child’s life and not letting them gain independence, which is often used with the overall term helicopter parenting. According to a recent study released by National Bureau of Economic Research, the reality show “16 and Pregnant” ultimately led to a 5.7% reduction in teen births in the 18 months after its premiere on TV. This TV show is set out to show teen girls the struggles and problems they would have to face if getting pregnant at a young age and to prevent the rates of teen pregnancy from increasing. Teen pregnancy is a communal problem, a family problem, and a personal problem all rolled into one. It frequently goes hand in hand with premarital sex. Problems come when the news needs to breach each parent’s party. After which, these impressions simply serve no purpose but to put them off, and deduce to mere nuisance to them when the truth of their situation slowly sinks in.
