Every child in the Foster Care System has their own reason and their own story for being there, but who will listen? Every child has a voice that matters, no matter how small. Children in the system are pulled, moved, rejected, adopted, and transferred throughout the FCS without being consulted about the who, what, wheres, and whys of the situation. Most of them just get in the car waiting to see where the system will put them next. Each year the amount of children in the system continues to grow every year; however, nothing that those working for the system do can put an end to its exponential growth.
The foster care system is successful in helping these children have an equal opportunity and a chance for a “normal life”. Foster care requires protection and the service to children to give them the best family and provide the wellbeing of the child. By removing a child from their given home and into safe facilities, it can give them the necessary resources to grow and adapt. Indeed, a foster parent can learn to love a child as if they were their own and provide for them just as a parent should. There are a growing number of youth in the Denver welfare system that are failing to achieve permanency. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the number of teens emancipated from foster care was 20,289 (10).
When people think of children, images of innocence and love flood their minds. Sadly, not all children get to experience love. The foster system was created to place minors into a state certified home. Individuals may know what foster care is, but many are unaware of what goes on in the system. Due to unfortunate circumstances, foster children’s lives are in the hands of a new guardian and grow up depending on the system.
Have you ever thought about how it feels to be ripped out of the only place that you know as home? To get no explanation of why your parents just did not want you anymore? Not a lot of people think about this. Usually, the only people that do think about this is children that are experiencing or have experienced this problem. Literature Review Throughout the years, research has been conducted on the effects that foster care can have on children. In the United States alone, there are roughly 670,000 children who have spent time in the foster care system each year (“Foster Care,” 2017). Of those children, approximately 33% of them age out of foster care system. Studies then show that the foster care system has had varying effects on the children who are/have been a part of it. In many cases, studies have noted the effects of attachment for children in foster care.
