Certain do not have safety, and they could definitely fire at any given moment. Guns kill people and that does not need to take place. Guns are a dangerous object and if someone does not know how to operate a gun. Guns aren't something for everybody, and aren't allowed at school what so ever.
Violent criminals know that currently schools are gun free zones, and can use this factor to their advantage. Rather than falling victim to an attack on the school; teachers could protect themselves and their students. Students could feel much safer if their teacher was armed. Students would feel more safe if they knew they could be protected from an attack from an intruder or another student. Criminals know that teachers currently are not armed and could potentially see schools as a target.
(Smith, T.N. 2012) The students and staff while on campus who are protecting themselves or another should not be subject to arrest or be punished for a crime. Students need to properly educate the public on the benefits of carrying guns on the campus. By states not allowing guns on campus it is making a target for the shootings. Research says there are more rapes, assaults, and robberies than killings.
Hypothetically, a law is passed stating that teachers are allowed to carry guns in school. In a sick twisted world, the teacher becomes the school shooter. Your student is in class and their teacher pulls out their government funded school weapon and starts shooting. How is your child supposed to protect themselves if the approved district teacher starts shooting the students with a malicious intent. Teachers should not be allowed to carry guns at school.
Imagine its an ordinary day at your college, everything happening in perfect sync and it is normal but all of a sudden you hear a gunshot, then another one and it keeps happening? Imagine this situation and you have nothing to protect yourself with, now imagine it with you having a gun with you to protect yourself from the shooter, wouldn’t that make you feel safe and secure? In 2013, at least 27 shootings occurred in or near a college. Eighteen peoples were casualties of these tragedies and
Over the past few weeks, arming teachers has been a controversial topic throughout the country. School shootings have taken the lives of many over the past few years, yet they are becoming more and more frequent. In today’s society children shouldn’t have to go to school worried if they are going to be safe that day. If teachers are armed it will add that extra bit of protection to the children. A big question is if arming teachers is even going to matter if an active shooter happens to be in that school.
Non supporters of concealed carry on campus have great counter arguments for the pro-gun supporters. Someone carrying a weapon can be easily disarmed. A weapon can go off accidentally through negligent discharge. According to ConcealedCampus.org, “Among the more than 150 college campuses that currently allow concealed carry, there have been three accidental/negligent discharges—two by faculty/staff and one by a student. Two of the negligent discharges were the result of the license holder carrying the gun in a pants pocket without a holster (both of these incidents resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to the license holder’s leg), and one was the result of the license holder showing a new gun—a gun with which she was not yet familiar—to her coworkers (this incident resulted in only minor abrasions that did not require medical attention)”.
For this reason, security professionals believe that arming students shoot back would actually make matters worse in the extremely rare instances where mass shootings occur on campus.” This can create a bigger problem than the one before. Such accidental shootings are not accountable for which leaves families of innocent victims upset and frustrated because justice is never served. According to The Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus “Despite the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois, college campuses are far safer than the communities that surround them. Ninety three percent of the violence against college students occurs off campus, where guns are widely available.
Mass shootings have been a major issue in this country. One common place these shootings take place is on school grounds. These events keep happening with really no solution to put an end to these tragedies. Recently, a bill had been proposed in Wisconsin that would lift the ban on guns in campus buildings in UW schools. This means more guns on campus.
However, for some people, the sight of an open gun will not make them feel safe and uneasy. By allowing open carry, you are ensuring trust amongst your peers and those around you to protect you with your life; however, relying on a stranger to protect your life is a gamble and one that several people are not will to make. Finally, open carry on school campuses will lead to more violence. As reported in various school shootings, such the shooting in Albemarle High School in North Carolina on September 2014, some shootings were caused by arguments between two students. The incident, and several others public shooting incidents, would have been avoided if the shooter did not have a weapon on his person and if the country had more strict gun control laws.
I feel that the people ever allowed to bring guns onto school grounds are law enforcement. Many people, such as myself, would not feel safe being in a school environment being around people with guns on their hip. We come to school to learn and to hopefully feel safe, but having tons of people with guns on them would not make me feel safe whatsoever. Yes, if there ever was a school shooting on campus, it could help bring the victim level down if there is someone in the area of the shooter. School shootings are pretty rare even though they have been more frequent recently.
In today’s society, it seems every time we turn the news on there is another school shooting. From the shooting at Columbine in 1999, to Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the most recent shooting at Umpqua Community College less than a month ago, more than 75 people have died in those four shootings alone. School shootings have become a major issue in the United States in the past few years. The argument over if teachers and principals should be able to conceal and carry weapons is of major controversy amongst politicians, school boards, parents, and the general public. Wouldn’t parents want to know their children are protected while at school by teachers carrying concealed weapons?
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
In order to nurture a healthy learning environment at America’s schools and universities, it is critical that students as well as faculty feel safe on campus. Recent pandemonium of violent crimes on campus has many pro-gun activists suggesting that both the Students and Teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on
In some cases it could make the scene more dangerous; for example how could law enforcement determine the difference between an armed student or staff to the actual shooter. If schools would allow trustworthy staff members to carry a firearm, many shootings could be stopped. Another major point for conceal and carry on campuses is a handgun could stop an assault when students are walking alone during the night.
