Five days after the Confederacy’s surrender, John Wilkes Booth had successfully killed one of the most influential presidents in American history to do what he believed would redeem power to the southern states. Booth’s main goal was to tear down the Union’s government by taking down their leader and his successors, but the original plan did not involve the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Historian Christopher Hammer explained in his article "Booth's Reason for Assassination", the former actor had created a group of co conspirators and designed "a ploy on March 17 to capture Lincoln as he traveled in his carriage [and had] collapsed when the president changed his itinerary—and several of Booth’s conspirators ultimately left the group.” (Teaching History). In contrast to unreasonable discounts of conspiracy theories, a new approach to phenomena of conspiracy theories focuses on investigation of the cause of conspiracy within a particular historical context. A variety of scholars from different disciplines have pursued to address the logic of conspiracy theory, within cultural and political context. This generates critical comment. A new aspect with a focus on conspiracy as a culture detailed by Peter Knight in his books, (Conspiracy Culture: From Kennedy to the X-Files and Conspiracy Nation: The Politics of Paranoia) provides a new insight in understanding conspiracy theories.

Webster’s definition of a conspiracy theory is a theory that explains an event or situation as the result of a secret plan by usually powerful people or groups. Conspiracy theories are also able to point to real problems within society, especially in relation to the government and American’s question of legal authority. In each chapter of Knight’s work, he examines a different aspect of contemporary conspiracy culture and how it can apply to this new way of thinking that occurred after the post-modern shift. He addresses this shift throughout the book, particularly in the introduction of the text. For example, he claims that: “The style of conspiracy has accordingly changed from a rigid conviction about a particular demonized enemy, to a cynical and generalized sense of ubiquity…conspiring forces in a world in which everything is connected” (Knight, 3). This post-modern shift is caused by suspicious societal thinking.
According to Robert H. Knapp, author of “A Psychology of Rumor”, defines rumors as, “a proposition for belief of topical reference disseminated without official verification” (Behrens). Rumors are current stories passing rapidly from person to person with unverified truth. Rumors hold some amount of connection to the people it reaches because they are usually circulated around recent or current events. Rumors are commonly believable stories because some people may not know the real truth and are willing to believe anything. Knapp categorizes rumors into three classifications.
