A DNA databank is a database of DNA profiles. Forensic DNA databases are now well established in many countries in the world. Anyone who can access an individual’s forensic DNA profile can use it to track the individual or their relatives. Access to a DNA sample can reveal more detailed information about a person’s health. The database would be an invaluable tool for identifying and catching criminals. Because investigators sometimes find DNA at crime scenes, all they would have to do is test the sample against the database and catch the crook. I think there should be a DNA databank for everyone. As genetic databases become increasingly common in other countries the sharing of data between international police forces is likely to increase. Many unsolved crimes would be resolved. As far as public health the CDC would be ahead of the curve as to the status of the overall health of the community at large. It would make things easy overall because if people refuse, then that shows they have something they are possibly hiding. The United States should not establish a DNA databank for all citizens because others can take all of their personal stuff. There should not be a DNA databank because DNA information could be abused by corrupt police and others illegally passing information to unauthorized people. A national DNA bank would be massively expensive and bureaucratic. Whatever the utility of DNA samples, there is something inherently disturbing about entering every baby on a database at birth.
