In the infamous year of 2016, the first democratic woman candidate ran for President of the United States of America: Hillary Clinton. While she won the popular vote, she did not receive enough electoral votes to become President causing national outrage as many viewed her opponent, Donald Trump, as an inferior choice. The truth, with personal politics aside, lies in the fact that Clinton has more experience in politics and has a vast knowledge regarding government. She has served as Secretary of State, U.S. senator for New York, as the first lady of the United States, as the first lady of Arkansas, as a lawyer, and law professor. The influence the presidency position holds cannot be underestimated and despite the fact that the President inevitably experiences many checks of power, they serve as a role model to the country. In this way, Trump’s election proved tragic to those who identify as women. It brought to light the fact that the United States of America does not protect its women but instead stands by perpetrators of sexual assault. This is evident in what Donald Trump defended as “locker room” talk. As NY Times reports, “You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.” He later states, “Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.” While not only degrading to women, as he comments that “they” will let you do anything, it also brings to attention that undeniably Trump advocates for sexual assault of women as implies he has done so himself. He admits in the beginning part of the conversation to have tried to seduce a married woman. “I moved on her, actually. You know, she was down on Palm Beach. I moved on her, and I failed. I’ll admit it.” If his tactics consisted of grabbing her “by the pussy” because he can “do anything” then his actions lack consent which translates to sexual assault.
