If I was involved, I would have temporary shut down the bath house. Moving towards the fact that bath houses were spreading sexual transmitted disease. In my opinion, if a place is spreading a disease, then becomes our responsibility to place a ban on it. Bathhouse that symbolized freedom to choose a partner(s) of your choice was converted into a threat house to human population. As we covered in chapter one, the aim of epidemiologists is to control the spread of diseases as well as prevent it. Our actions should reflect disease controlling/ preventing methods, shutting the bath house is such an example of that. In my opinion, this not freedom. I believe, that the bath house should have shut down until, there was a cure and path to control the epidemic was found. When the questions are answered, then it should be reopened. The three concepts that we talked about in class, which were observed in the movie were case control study, mapping and relative risk. Case control method appeared when the two epidemiologists were taking and one wrote on the board names of different disease like hepatitis B on the other hand along the side they wrote if they cause cancer or not, if there is long incubation period they put an X on it if it is true. The second-class concept relative risk appeared when group of epidemiologists were sitting at the table eating lunch. One of the group member said that they did an experiment where they took blood samples from 60 gay mans who has the hepatitis B and 60 gay mans who do not ( exposed and unexposed) and they used relative risk method to calculate that the test was 80%
