Ellis thought that Washington feared the possibility of dying while in office, by volunteering stepping down from office he set the model of how the future presidents should leave office. He wanted to quit while he was still well known, to show that presidents were replaceable no matter how well know they are. This Chapter shows Washington is his true kind and responsible nature, Ellis showed Washington during his important moments of leading a country. Ellis message here was how Washington set the terms of how this country should be run. He made sure he didn’t stay for long even though people wanted him too.
Like many great leaders who inspired their followers, “Washington valued the people he led rather than thinking of them as means to an end” (Stallard). Washington’s soldiers knew that he respected them and saw them as equals, and that he would experience the severe hardships like they did. His humility was reflected in the way he gave people a voice by seeking and considering their opinions and ideas. The historical representation present a leader who inspires confidence in the people who followed him. George Washington, like all effective leaders, communicated with his people and had always valued their opinions on matters concerning them.
Washington wants to give a message of guidelines to the people after he is finished serving his second term. “It should, by all rights, be called the farewell letter, for it was in form and tone an open letter to the American people, telling them they were now on their own.” (Ellis 122) Washington's main goal for the country was to stay at peace. Washington said this would happen by staying out of foreign affairs and focusing on ways for the country to become more strong. “The rest of the Farewell Address was then devoted to foreign policy, calling for strict American neutrality and diplomatic independence from the tangled affairs of europe.”
When hearing George Washington’s Farewell Address for the first time it is easy to understand it is well written and the substance is things he really felt is important. However once the time is spent relating his speech to todays times and problems the magnitude of his word is really understood. Almost 250 years later and 44 more presidents, George Washington’s thoughts still apply perfectly to the current state of the U.S. So much has change sense he gave this address but unity, Stoping the divide of political parties, morality, and avoiding entangling
With some Americans refusing to stay open minded to the beliefs of the opposite political party, our country will get nowhere. As one of our country’s Founding Fathers, Washington would not approve of this, and demand the next president change this. If George Washington was still alive today, he would be able to give the next president advice to transform our country. Someone with the unbiased mindset toward the two main political parties would be a much needed perspective for the next president.
One of the hardest parts that laid on George Washington’s shoulders was no knew what it really involve; there was no real answer either, he just had to make it up as he went along. He wrote: “ Few can realize the difficult and delicate part of which a man in my situation has to act I walk on untrodden ground. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may bot hereafter be drown into precedent.” Washington helped create the basic aspects of being the president that would later set the standard for all
George Washington was a great leader. “He respected all his men and listen to their ideas one by one.” This makes happy his men to be treated with respect to be listening. They feel like humans. Doing this make people want to work that help run well the United States.
While talking about the problems of his time he mentioned that “ The material problems that face us today are not such as they were in Washington’s time, but the underlying facts of human nature are the same now as they were then.” This quote shows how he used the comparison to show the audience that while the problems are not the same, they have been overcome in the past. Many Americans look back at the founding fathers and the American Revolution and think of them as
He goes on to elaborate that whether you are an American by birth or choice you should put your nation before anything else because your unity as a country is what protects your freedom. Unity was a particular idea he mentions multiple times throughout the letter and stressed during his presidency; he worried the Union would fall apart, especially due to political parties, and tried his best to keep the nation aware of their similar interests. Moreover, Washington had certain domestic policies, one of which was displayed during the Whiskey Rebellion. Being an Army general, Washington was a man of order, and one of his goals as President was to bring order to the country. Therefore, he supported the taxing of the people because they kept the government stable.
When coming to the land soon to be American, George Washington had thoughts and beliefs that the 13 original colonies wouldn't hate or discriminate against the people. Instead, America was created by people that had different thoughts than one another and different beliefs then one another, for people that just wanted to live a life that was free and beautiful and gave them the insurance of safety for them and their future no matter what problems they were in. Washington's thoughts, however, are being ruined just as the nation is.
Although unrelatable and underappreciated in the eyes of modern history, George Washington shows his greatness through his character. Contemporary culture often neglects to recognise Washington’s greatness. Sadly, he has become a figure so far removed from the ideals and lives of modern Americans, that his name often provokes boredom. Nonetheless, his character proved to be perfect for what America needed during his life. His greatness was largely due to chance.
Washington believed that collaboration was key to creating a more inclusive society for both races. Instead of getting African-Americans to the position of the whites, their contribution to the economy is enough for the whites to acknowledge their success. With one-third of the population being African-Americans, Washington points out that the one-third could either could add to the “crime and ignorance” or the “intelligence and progress” of the South. This meaning that through a collective effort, the success of the South would be furthered. “Cast down your bucket among these people who have helped make possible of this magnificent representation of the progress of the South.”
Washington appears to make some compromises in his argument. His speech is actually called the "Atlanta Compromise." He says that "in no way have the value and manhood of the American Negro
“This is a the source of our confidence, the knowledge that god calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.” He thanks god that different men, women, and children from different race can be together George Washington gave an excellent speech. George Washington was different from other presidents. He knew sooner or later that that future president would be paid. He didn't want the money.
Because Washington’s hope is to inspire his audience even after he retires from the presidency, he attempts to persuade the American public into listening to thoughts, ideas, and advice for America’s future. Washington uses plain folks to appeal to his audience and make himself appear as an equal, average citizen in America. The speech begins by addressing the listeners as “Friends and Citizens” ( Washington 1). Washington’s first words in his address place him among the American citizens, all of whom he considers to be friends. This reference to the friendship between Washington and the public occurs multiple times in the speech as Washington refers to himself as a “parting friend” (3) and “an old and affectionate friend” (14).
