Healthcare Facilities Trending on Social Media: Helping Other or Hurting Them?
Introduction
Social Media is starting to consume large portions of our day, so why not have our healthcare join the fun? According to Kelly Wallace from CNN news, approximately 9 hours of a teens day is spent on social media. 28% of the time we spend online is said to be on social media. Healthcare facilities are making accounts on social media sites for beneficial purposes. Since we obviously use it so often, there are many ways this could help not only us, but the employees as well as the facility itself. They can better connect with people and get information out on real time. This is to potentially only help and inform people of the internet, but there are ethical concerns that may become an issue.
Pros
The positives of healthcare organizations being on social media is almost endless. One pro is during emergency situations where large areas are affected, hospitals can quickly notify people via Twitter or Facebook what their current capacity is, their emergency room access, and even operation statuses. Most commonly to be found on the internet would be common facts about cold and flu seasons and how to stay germ free and healthy. Though common facts and statistics can be found, so can symptoms of more serious and rare illnesses. Mayo Clinic is one of the most famous online resources used for information of health related issues. People can go onto their site and find credible information made by medical professionals with high degrees.
