In today’s society, immigration is a very politically charged subject. Whether you are for or against immigration reform, it is almost impossible to turn on the television or read a newspaper without seeing or hearing something about immigration. The new law that is being proposed is a merit based immigration system. It does differ from our current immigration laws in a number of ways but the question is will it be better or worse? What will a bill like this do to our current immigrants and how will it affect those who wish to enter our country as legal immigrants. This paper will discuss what a merit base system is and examine what it will mean going forward with our county in terms of immigration. Merit based immigration is not a new concept. “In fact some countries already practice this merit base system for immigration, such as Canada and Austria (Jeff Sessions 2018)”. Deciding who is qualified and who is not can be very subjective. There is no doubt going forward as this unfolds we are going to see some sort of immigration reform and many lines drawn in the sand. There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument and people are going to be impacted by whatever decision is made. Going from a family based to a merit based pathway to citizenship is going to cause some heartache and tough decisions. What will happen to our economy when we only allow the elite enter? After examining both sides of the argument it is still very unclear what rewards will be gained if any or ramifications. One thing that was discovered is certain and that is the amount of people migrating to the US will be substantially lower. Whether that is good or bad is not
