“Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free, We’ve golden soil and wealth to toil… For those who’ve come across the seas, We’ve boundless plains to share…” The Advance Australia Fair holds so much promise for those who need faith and for those who need a home. But wait, do they actually hold up to their Anthem? According to Cohen’s article, the Australian government isn’t letting refugee/migrants in the country, instead they send them to “a very dangerous place full of contagious diseases” one of those places being Manus, just off the northern coast of Australia. Why, How and Is Australia allowed to do this? The idea of immigration to any state is going to have a different connotation no matter what group may be emigrating, whether it be native american refugees or syrian refugees, states have the option to let these groups emigrate or not, or at least they think they do considering most of them just turn them away anyway. Although states are not really at fault for refugees choosing their country to flee to they must consider the extremities that the refugees have gone through to get where they are. In Cohen's article, Charlie Benjamin (the Manus governor) doesn’t fail to include his input about the situation at hand, “It’s just morally wrong to dump these people here and then say Never Australia,” and also adds how they thought things would go originally which did not turn out to their liking. The right to seek asylum is a basic human right; people who live in a suffering homeland should be able to seek refuge in a country where their safety is secure, which brings us back to the idea of being morally incorrect while also looking out for the states/countries best
