Writing an argument is something all strong writers know how to do. By learning from other peoples mistakes and the different types of methods writers become more persuasive in their arguments. The Toulmin method is one way to analyze an argument. Stephen Toulmin created this method to better understand and examine the pieces of an argument in order to decide the effectiveness of it. In the article “The Locavore Myth: Why Buying from Nearby Farmers Won’t Save the Planet”, James E. McWilliams argues that although the locavore movement has brought attention to industrialized food, the movement still does not prevent the damage that is being done to the earth.
From the very first sentence in The Locavore’s Dilemma he states how he feels about this idea, “There is a growing trend, or at least a growing noise in favor of eating locally produced food” (Pelletier). Right from the start he calls it a noise, making it pretty clear how he feels about this subject. He also points out that as of right now if we only ate within a 100 mile radius we wouldn't eat what we do now. Fresh fruit only comes from south of us, farther than 100 miles. A very important point he makes that is very easy to relate to here is farming.
I have learned that success is to be measured not much by the position that one has reached in the live as by the obstacles which he has had to overcome while trying to succeed. Everyone has faced obstacles and most of the time some people overcome them. Thee obstacles that people face have to overcome, live with them, or even just go around them. Three characters that face and overcome obstacles in imaginary literature or real life are Jon Krakauer, Odysseus, and me. Jon Krakauer had obstacles to face when he climbed down Mt.Everest in the excerpt of “Into Thin Air”.
Due to McWilliams’ strong claim, evidence, warrant, backing, and rebuttal to counter arguments, his argument is therefore an effective one, according to the Toulmin method. The most important and key components, that are vital to an argument, are the argument’s claim, qualifiers, as well as the evidence the author uses to support their argument. If there were no claim, then the author has no firm stance or basis for their argument, because they would have nothing to defend or persuade their readers of. The claim James E. “Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat”, is a famous quote by the well known philosopher Socrates, who believed this is the perspective we should take when we are eating food. Unfortunately, the times have changed and so has the way we eat. We no longer have to go hunting for our food, or grow crops to receive all of our fruits and vegetables. Because we have become a society that has grown into the new world of technology, there would be no need to rely on ourselves for what we need-- we can simply gather our resources from other people. In the book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”, written by Michael Pollan, takes us on a journey full of concerns of the “Food Industrial Complex”.
Local sustainable is one of the four food chains Michael Pollan talks about in his book The Omnivore’s Dilemma. The local sustainable food is grown on small farms. Food from farms like these don’t travel long distances like they would in the industrial or industrial organic food chain. These farms also have diverse crops and animals. Local sustainable is the best food chain to feed all of the people in the United States because it doesn’t harm the environment, animals aren’t mistreated, and crops are naturally raised.
In Maryruth Belsey Priebe’s article “Benefits of Being a Locavore” she expresses the benefits to buying local produce. Priebe catches her readers in her opening statement discussing the benefits of becoming a locavore with “Supported by environmentalists and average households, locally grown food is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint while enjoying tastier, healthier food at a lower cost” (Priebe). A locavore is a word used to describe someone who purchases food locally in order to try to reduce their carbon footprint. As we go through The Jungle, Omnivore’s Dilemma, and Food, Inc., it becomes apparent that all of these publishings target ethos to appeal to their audience. Upton Sinclair uses ethos during the time when he describes workers washing their hands in the water used for the sausage (Sinclair 143). This is bias because it compels the reader into acknowledging that the things going into food is not right, however it does not show any good qualities in the meatpacking industry. Therefore, this affects the reader’s value system because when they were informed of the monstrosities going on within the food industries, it changes their trust towards the industry. The article “Is It Possible to be a Conscientious Meat Eater,” written by Sunaura Taylor and Alexander Taylor, looked like a very convincing argument. “Is It Possible to be a Conscientious meat eater” discusses that processed meat is bad for the world, and how it affects us and our surrounding environments in a negative outcome. The one thing I enjoyed reading from this article was the supportive use of evidence through facts to support the author’s thesis statement. However I would argue that the authors, when writing this, didn’t do a thorough job on keeping the subject professional, detailed, unbiased, and citing the sources for their information.
The rising health problems in the United States of America are caused by poor nutrition, people who are sedentary, the lack of healthcare prevention, and many more. As reported on the Tikkun website, “Of the many systems in our world today that need to be reimagined, none is more important for our future than our food system” (1). The lack of our food system is one of the many factors that has led the United States to its uprising dilemmas; one of the many factors are the food deserts across the U.S. Food deserts are geographic areas where access to affordable healthy and nutritious food are limited, or impossible to purchase, by residents in the area. Food deserts are prone to low-income areas that can’t afford transportation, and due to the lack of grocery stores and supermarkets that sells fresh produce and healthy food within convenient distance to resident’s homes, there is a difficulty in obtaining healthy food options which leads to countless health issues. According to the Diabetes Forecast website, “About 18.3 million Americans live in low-income areas and are far from a supermarket” (1).
Food deserts are areas, urban or rural, lacking access to full-service supermarkets or fresh fruits or vegetables. Urban food desert is a “symptom of disinvestment, spatial concentration of poverty, and institutional racism (Blumberg, 2015).” Processes that lead to the creation of food desert is the U.S cities include: low income, low access, and low quality. Individuals with low incomes are likely to live in an area where nutritious foods are scarce. They are least likely to afford a lot, or if any, of fresh produce.
