Ever since the 26th amendment was passed, eighteen year olds were allowed to vote. This new voting age led to this new age group showing less representation than older groups. It was then thought of in the Montgomery County to try and change this, so they lowered the voting age to sixteen. This new way of thinking was brought up to try and bring up the amount of young voters they see less of in elections. I support this new change because it seems like a good idea to let younger people have the chance to voice their opinions.

A lot people question whether the legal drinking age should be lowered, or remain at 21. Some may think it isn’t such a good idea, because of the lack of maturity, and others may think it a good idea, because some people are going to do it anyway. However there are many pros and cons of lowering the legal drinking age. One pro is that the actual age where a person is considered to be an adult is 18.
I think if our country keeps the voting age at 18 there won't be that much voters because lowering the voting age would decrease the percentage of participation. Also in 1948, 51% of voters participated, our goal is to increase this percentage. If they would let people vote at home it would increase the percentage. Most of the younger voters do not care to vote at all.
I am writing in response to the article, “Labor will look at dropping voting age to 16, says Bill Shorten” (The Sydney Morning Herald, 31/9/15). I firmly believe that the voting age in Australia should be reduced to 16 years of age. Today’s younger generation are taking on more and more responsibilities therefore making them more than eligible to have their say into who is going to run their country. In today’s society 16 year olds are capable of obtaining a job, earning their learners permit and paying taxes.
There are many pros and cons when it comes to lowering the voting age, and when you talk about changing the voting age there is a lot to consider. Many 16 year olds in this day and time are to irrisponsible and to involved in entertainment of every kind. and they show very lillte intrest in voting, wether you are talking about laws or presidents. What we need to ask ourselfs is, how can we encorage the teens? or, what teach them to get them interested in voting?
I believe that 16 and 17-year-olds can get into the mentality that they should be mature enough to vote just like they are allowed to work and be able to drive. People think just because you turn 18 you immediately are mature for anything, but I think otherwise. 16 year old are able to work in jobs, which shows that even if they are young enough to vote, they are still old enough to become employed. Even though, most people might think that once you turn 18 and the decision to fight and die for our country is our choice, then being a 16 or 17-year-old wouldn 't be a mature choice to be able to go out and vote. If 16 and 17-year olds are able to vote, it would be because it is our future ahead of us with the decisions that we make, this is why I feel that vast majority of young people vote than older
Lowering the voting age from 18 to 16 the pros and cons. Some would agrue that lowering the voting age would increase participation of young voters some say it would have no real effect. The national voteing age is a debate that has mainy devided, mainy say it only distracts from more serious issues while highlighting the "lack of civic responsibilty'' among today's young people. We should explore other solutions in order to fix the voters turnout rate in our country like voting booths or allowing people to vote from home, research shows that "america ranks at the bottom of the developed nations in turnouts"not just based on our national voting age but because we fail to explore other solutions.
Lowering the Voting Age to 16 would have many possitive results. Having younger voters participating can measure up very well. Voting ages are not set in stones. One real problem facing America is the aging voting population. In 1950, the elderly, defined as people over the age of 65, were a mere, 13%of eligible voters.
Yet, to avoid this, we can teach them how not to be swayed at school. According to the Electoral Reform Society, they support young citizens at the age of 16 in how to vote and what decision making they should do. If teenagers get the support from authorized adults who can lead young adults to the right path through society, I believe we can trust their opinions. The Fulcrum exclaims that the Ontario Government already recognizes that 16 year olds can understand the issues and independent judges on them. From this, we can say that adults keep full eye on young adults and what kind of thinking they have towards politics so it is safe for teenagers to start voting.
On the other hand, many people who want the voting age to remain the same claim that at age 16 or 17 there’s no burning issues to motivate or interest teenage voters. If the justification for lowering the voting age was to to boost voter turnout there was plenty of other solutions presented in the article. Shin states“Other possible changes include same-day registration, allowing paroled felons to vote, and giving candidates easier access to apartment buildings to campaign.” This only reinforces the importance of young voters to Council members because as stated in the article, “reports from Denmark suggest that younger teenagers are more likely to cast a ballot than slightly older peers.” At such a young age teenagers are taught to take action and strive towards creating a better future for themselves and starting at grassroots level with municipal elections in my opinion is the perfect way to start.
