North American Free Trade Agreement
When campaigning, President Ronald Reagan suggested a North American common market. The Canadian Prime Minister at the time, Brian Mulroney, also showed interest in this idea and this was the beginning of negotiations for what later became known as the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. The agreement was initially signed in 1988 and took effect in 1989. Later President H.W. Bush entered into negotiations with the President of Mexico to form a trade agreement. Later, Canada requested that the agreement be expanded to include all three countries and this eventually led to The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and went into effect in 1994. …show more content…

When companies operated in Mexico they were not subject to all of the rules and regulations required by the United States. Many companies saw this as an opportunity to use outside methods to succeed. For example, companies in Mexico used additional fertilizers and chemical and increased the amount of in the country. This made rural farmers have to move into bordering areas in order to remain in business. They removed hundreds of thousands of forest per year and the results helped to contribute to global warming.
Recommendations
NAFTA had specific advantages and disadvantages for each country and for specific areas within each country. It is important to examine each area to determine if the benefits outweigh the cost. It is clear that there were several benefits to trade and procedures between each of these countries but were the benefits received from trade enough to outweigh the negative effects on other areas. The negative effects included displaced Mexican workers crossing the border illegally, exploited Mexican workers, deterioration of the Mexican environment, and an increased trade deficit in the United States. However, from an economic view, it is clear that NAFTA is a successful accomplishment.
