In the medical field, depending on the employer, they may offer additional pay to register nurses who are willing to work the irregular hours of night shift. Employers offer a shift differential to motivate workers to work during the night, on weekends, and public holidays. For example, in 2010 a register nurse working during the day at CHW, California Hospital was paid $51.48 an hour while a register nurse working on night shift was paid $55.48 an hour. Night shift nurses deserve higher pay because they lose precious time with their families. Due to the disruption of family routines, limiting the amount of time they can spend with their families, and being placed on different time schedules than their families, workers had poor family functions. Several studies have reported that night shift work may interfere with family relationships. For example, a population-based sample of 1,438 nurses between the age 20-45 years was mailed a questionnaire. Between day shift, non-nightshift, and rotation shift nurses and their family functions showed the percentage of poor family function compared to day shift nurses had 1.533-and 1.38-fold (95% CI=1.09-2.14 and 1.01-1.88) Married nurses by contrast had 0.44-fold (95% CI=0.29-0.66) risk to have poor family function compared to single nurses. (Tai, Shu-Yu et al) This study has showed how badly working night shift affects family relationships in married women. Because of this disturbance many women working this shift have complained about not seeing their husbands enough. This study shows that married women would have a better relationship with their family and friends working day shift. Working day shift is easier because the schedule matches the rest of the world. Most people work during the day since that’s how life functions. Having a similar schedule to family members and friends allows nurses to bond with them on a deeper level and have more options to schedule everyday
