“The intent behind closing these gaps is to break the connection between race or family income and achievement while at the same time continuing to improve the performance of the top students. ”(28) Gaps between race and wealth have always been issues in schools. Historically, children living in poverty are more likely to score lower on tests than those
Additionally, the author mentions that according to the professor’s research, the “score gap between American students and those in the highest-ranked countries” decreases by “25 percent in math and 40 percent in reading” once adjustments for the student’s socioeconomic status have been made. However, this problem is getting harder for public schools to solve as “[t]he public school population is getting poorer”. Porter then introduces Andreas Schleicher, the top educational expert of O.E.C.D who runs the PISA tests, as Schleicher firmly disagrees with Professor Carnoy’s claims. According to Professor Carnoy’s results, “fewer than 15 percent” of American students should be from families of lower socioeconomic status, but Schleicher found that “65 percent of principals in American schools say at least 30 percent of their students come from disadvantaged families”.

Name:Dawson Whitcher Income inequality might be the biggest problem our new president will face. There are many reasons why it’s a problem in America. Income is a difference in opportunity chances if you have more money you have a better chance of getting a better job. Examples of income is are food drives in schools some people with income have trouble going to places like school, job, or stores when needed. There are many more problems than this.
“Totally like whatever, you know?” by Taylor Mali suggests that post modern teenagers no longer have the same confidence or articulation when they speak, and that they lack the qualities of a favorable leader. He wants to expose our foolishness; the fact that we no longer have our own sense of authority when speaking. This poem is intended for teenagers. The language in both the title and the poem itself suggests this, by using words such as you know and whatever.
This does not mean that every person who come from a low income family is going to fail but majority will. It is truly a never ending cycle where pointing fingers seem to be the only way to pinpoint the problem. While some people who are blessed to have someone in their lives who motivate them, this sometimes can make people have expectations regarding opportunity. This might cause the person to feel as if whatever happens it will not have a big impact because of the color of the person 's skin or social class. Only 75 percent of blacks have received post-high school education, compared to 85 percent of whites. Not surprisingly, blacks on average also make less money than whites” (Philip M. Deutsch). It’s unjust that people of color are treated as inferior to white people, and it is that kind of social issue that interferes with the liberties of all Americans of
To some the American dream seems out of reach Race, economic background and where you live play a role in economic mobility. According to CNN in 2010 white Americans have 22 times more wealth then blacks and 15 times more than Hispanics. (Cefferty, jack)This statistic from 2010 is showing that white Americans have a higher
America prides itself on being one of the most effective democratically governed counties. The idea of the American dream is that all people have equivalent political freedoms and a responsive government. However the effectiveness of social equality is being threatened by increasing inequality in the United States. Economic inequality in the US has expanded drastically. The wealth gap has had drastic changes over the past 35 years.
Social arrangements and social status affects people greatly and that why we don’t always understand the problems that are facing our community. When someone is raised in a rich or poor neighborhood, you and the people around you share have similar problems that it is no longer
(Kivel 1995) some "examples of institutional racism over the history of this country: exclusions from unions, organizations, social clubs, seniority systems (last hired, first fired), income differentials, predatory lending practices, inferior municipal services, admissions based on test scores, differential education based on preconceived potential or ability, monoculture school curricula. In each of these situations, people of color experience disadvantages that flow from one generation to another in reference to income, decision making, health status, knowledge and skill development, and quality of life. The greater loss is to the country as a whole of the talents and perspectives of a significant proportion of the population". (NASW,

Social Classes Social class is divided into six ladder rungs with the wealthiest on the top rung and poorest on the bottom rung, according to Joseph Kahl and Dennis Gilbert. This means that the wealthiest are the most powerful because they have money and the poorest or underclass has no chance of advancement up the ladder. There are truths to this picture of social class but looking at social class this way gives little hope to the parts of society that are in poverty of ever moving up the ladder (Henslin, 2014). “Today, the richest one percent of Americans earns nearly a quarter of the country’s income and control 40 percent of its wealth” (Wikibooks, 2015). People in this upper class have inherited their money from their relatives and have
One contributing factor to this is the freedom that our country affords us. Unlike some societies where individuals become locked into certain gender roles and castes, the unrestricted atmosphere of the US grants everyone the opportunity to succeed. With an excellent K-12 education system, American kids receive a free education with opportunities to go after their heart’s desire. Some more fortunate adolescents, like me, have the privilege to take AP classes at their schools. Colleges in our country offer a wide scope of different kinds of classes that allow every individual to receive the right education.
Governments also physically regulated them to impoverished parts of the countryside and cities (Sharma, 2012). During this time, the white minority benefited from discriminatory public policy. The inequality gap grew as many non-whites did not have the chance to accumulate capital in their own form of land, finance, skills, education or social network. According to Sharma (2012) high inequality increases if the creation of job opportunities is limited on a large enough scale and this was exactly the case in South Africa pre 1994, the rich and poor were kept apart, but they all still lived in the same country. Unemployment and therefore also income inequality have strong geographic dimensions, with insiders being largely urban and outsiders rural.
