Organized very differently than today’s cities, both spatially and socially; rural areas are located outside cities or towns and are not as glamourous as the city and are considered small towns. Stereotypes of rural America often misrepresent rural realities. The decline in farming and other rural industries has led to high poverty rates, few opportunities or amenities, few government services, hard to attack new residents, amongst other struggles. One of the main concerns in rural areas with regards to hazardous working conditions of rural workers. Intersectionality is the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. Environment Justice also looks at race, class, and gender in its analysis of environmental quality and how it is distributed. The movement from single-issue politics into a more comprehensive concern for all of the things create, support, and maintain the initial structure that makes inequality.
