Lars Gustafson 11/4/15 GEOG 304 Research Paper: Shark Finning With an alarming one in four shark species endangered across the globe, we have come to a breaking point where our oceans ecosystems could suffer permanent damage if the practice of shark finning in the oceans off of Eastern Asia continues as shark population’s plummet. According to www.stopsharkfinning.net, tens of millions of sharks are killed every single year just for the fins that are the main ingredient in shark fin soup. Shark fins are harvested to feed the growing demand for shark fin soup that is an Asian delicacy food. When the sharks are finned they are usually thrown back into the water and left to drown slowly.
Marine parks in the country like SeaWorld, have orcas in tanks that they live in captivity. They use most of the killer whales for their performances in the pool. We all know that orcas are social, and intelligent creatures, that live in the oceans of the earth. We also know that many scientist are trying to study these animals in captivity where they are in tankes. I think Killer Whales should not be in captivity because, of the injures they can get in their tanks, how they get stressed out and they are better in the wild.
Melissa Ramessar TA: John August 20th 2015 Lab section M 13 The effect on decreasing numbers in the shark population Summary There is a rapid increase of rays, skates and numerous small pieces as a result of the decrease of sharks along the eastern seaboard. As a result of intense fishing of sharks in the northwest Atlantic over the past few decades, the shellfish populations such as scallops and Chesapeake bay oysters are decreasing. One of the contributions to the 73 million sharks killed each year is due to the supply of fins need to make the Chinese delicacy shark fin soup.
Over the years, the number of deaths caused by the killer whales at Sea World increased significantly. Despite this, Sea World still decided to run their theme park and continue as though it was not a problem. Because they most likely fear of losing millions in the process, they acted in their self-interest, rather than taking the deaths and injuries in consideration. Furthermore, there is a part in the documentary that brings to light the misconceptions and lies as told by Sea World workers. Sea World workers tell tourists that collapsed dorsal fins are quite normal.
In conclusion Blackfish is gives audiences a shocking, aggressive and deeply compelling look into cruel practices of marine parks for decades that will change the way you look at captive/trained killer whales and other animals. In watching this documentary has significantly opened my eyes regarding the brutal treatment and methods of capturing wild animals giving me a greater sympathy for orcas in parks such as SeaWorld. This startling documentary will surprise audiences as Cowperthwaite is unrelenting in showing the fatal consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity while also critiquing of the cruel and immoral practises of
This is why I think that we should have shark nets around our beaches, so we can keep our selves and the sharks safe. It also makes people feel safe, so more people will go down to the beach.. I all so think that we should tag shark more to study them for where there swim off to, and see if there have a swim pattern. With more shark nets and tags around Australia a lot less people will die. Remember 2 people in WA this year have already died because of shark attacks, one here at Falcon.
Furthermore, this can be the cause of all the incidence including to what happened to Dawn Brancheau who was completely mutilated by a whale. Despite the interview with a former trainer, from a document which was published after the release of Blackfish by SeaWorld to object
Hundreds of Orca attacks have happened over the years, resulting in dead or injured trainers. All of Do we really have to bring in all this sadness, not only to the Orca’s Another reason is they only use killer whales for greed, not paying attention to to their health and needs. They only care about the money that they earn not thinking about the strong family bonds that they have. They on ly use the poor orcas for the money and the
People don 't understand that this doesn 't just affect whales, it also effect people to because the belugas play a very important role in our ecosystem. If we don 't stop killing or hurting them right now later down the road we will pay for it. Later on in life if you start to see overwhelming amount of bad fish for an ecosystem and they are destroying it because there are no predators to keep the fish population down. Beluga whale help keep the ocean 's ecosystem healthy by eating fish and reducing the amount of fish that are bad for an environment. Belugas also are good for the deep sea because when anything dies and falls to the abyss from the topside they go through different layers of the ocean.
When a whale is captured, trainers start to force whales to do stunt. The whales are forced to perform to people for money. According to Richard Bloom, “ Keeping orcas in captivity for human amusement must end. Forcing these intelligent creatures around is not right. ” This stated that forcing whales to do unnatural thing such as flips can be unhealthy for many whales.
Killer whales, more properly known as orcas, have been kept in captivity since 1961, helpless victims of a blatantly commercial experiment which has seen dozens of wild orcas plucked from their families and forced to live in artificial social groupings which bear scant resemblance to their natural order. Unaware of their plight, millions of people flock each year to watch the orca show, seduced by the extravagant promises of the display industry. Glossy brochures herald a spectacle - billed "The Wettest Show on Earth!" which will simultaneously entertain and educate the whole family. Visitors are invited to enter a fantasy land, where orcas weighing several tonnes circle, leap and tail-slap seemingly out of sheer high spirits. Highly-choreographed
These attacks can be fatal. However, the death toll of humans, the fact that sharks aren’t interest in humans, and the opinion of a shark attack survivor, persuaded my opinion that rogue sharks should be conserved; not kill.
Shark fin soup is of chinese origin and it is treated as a delicacy. It is a sign of wealth, each bowl is a $100 us dollars and it is usually served at business banquets and weddings. There is little to no taste in the shark fin and it is the most expensive type of fish in the fish market, there is no real purpose to why Rodriguez 3 humans should capture and kill sharks inhumanely; they are only harming the ecosystem. Sharks have been in this world for more than 450 million years they are the oldest species alive, they are older than dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are now extinct and sharks are not but if shark finning does not stop they will soon be extinct.
Strength is the word that comes to my mind when describing the book, The Handmaid’s Tale. This theme is seen throughout the book which is seen in Offred the majority of the time. In Gilead strength is what pushes her through each day. I believe that Offred is not the only one who shows strength, but many other women in the story do as well. Offred has an enormous amount of strength when she is forced to have sex with the commander.
Whale sharks like to hang out together and eat together. Now you know about whale sharks.
