All around the United States, there are people who probably never got the chance to go to college, not because they didn’t want to or weren’t motivated enough, but instead they couldn’t afford to go. In his book, The World Is Flat, Thomas L. Friedman talks about globalization, which means that the world is being flattened. What this means is countries are now able to compete with each other. One solution that would help people in a flattening world is free community college for two years. A majority of people have given up on the idea of college simply because it’s too expensive.
Education is an essential component of personal and societal growth, and higher education has been shown to have a positive impact on both individuals and societies. Free college tuition is a contentious issue that raises important questions about the accessibility and affordability of higher education, and while there is so much to support the idea, there are also some drawbacks that must be considered. Yes, the sound of getting a higher education for free may sound appealing, until you look into all that you could lose, then it doesn't sound so promising anymore. First off, if everyone gets to go to college for free, low and high-income students, the current high taxes will become even higher, since free tuition would be paid for with tax dollars. People from lower tax brackets would potentially be subsidizing the full post-secondary costs of families who could cover all or part of those costs by themselves (Chee, studentloanreport.net). Also, when you make something free, you increase its demand. This would result in the already extremely competitive admission to become far more impossible to get into a college of your choice.
So, if you believe that college should not be free because this would make students irresponsible and they would fool around as they do in high school and this is wrong. Because when college tuition becomes free there will be rules to make sure that the students work hard and take it seriously and handle the responsibilities. Free college would definitely help you in your life. It is mandatory for success. Yes some students do not take school seriously and that is why college should be free for students who do take school seriously.
But free community college does open up equal opportunities for American citizens to get high paying jobs(Gorfine). If more people get high paying jobs they would then have extra money to spend on the economy which would also open more jobs up for the people who couldn’t get the higher paying jobs(Cleveland). President Obama believes that, “In the coming years, jobs requiring at least an associate degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs requiring no college experience. We will not fill those jobs—or keep those jobs on our shores—without the training offered by community colleges.” Sooner or later a college will be necessary for people to get a job and in order to prevent many of America’s citizens from becoming unemployed the only solution is to supply them with a college education.
A free college tuition is definitely necessary for students because some are paying for college themselves, the college workload is stressful enough, and scholarships, grants, and financial aid doesn’t cover all costs. College tuition should be free because it would create positive changes for people attending college, universities, and the economy. First, most students are paying for their own tuition themselves because either they want to be independent and do so, or because their parents have made that decision for them.
