In my paper I will be stating my opinion on if super max prisons are doing what they were intended to do. Furthermore, what I feel are the improvements needed to terminate outside communication amongst inmates. Additionally, I will talk about the pros and cons of having this type of facility. Likewise, I will give general facts about super maximum security prisons. Lastly, I will explain what the differences between super max and the other levels of prison are.
In my opinion super-max prisons are not doing what they were intended to do. The improvements that need to be made in my opinion is hire more special investigators to read inmate’s mail so that it can stop actions being taken upon the country by those within the super maximum security prison. Not only that but also fix budget problems in order to have more people work for the company and get a law passed in order to get the Bureau of Prisons more involved in the situations at the prisons more freely. The things that they were intended to do was help modify behavior through sensory deprivation and solitary confinement. The pros of having a super maximum security prison is the safety for others because these inmates are dangerous. Coupled with the fact that super-max prisons is a corrections management tool used which is cost- effective and achieves outcome that no other approach can. On the contrary, the cons are long term solitary confinement for twenty three hours per day which is un-humane. Moreover this type of confinement harms parts of the brain because the inmates are reminiscing on the crimes committed in the past.
