Almost all of currently threatened species are at risk because of human activities, mainly due or habitat loss, introduction of exotic species or global warming. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) plans to change this. “The ESA was enacted by Congress in 1973. It states that the federal government has the responsibility to protect endangered species, threatened species and critical habitats. The ESA has a list to protect plants and animals nationally and worldwide. In 2009 there were 1,361 endangered or threatened plants or animals. The ESA looks at the overall health of a species and also scientific data. A few factors come into play as well, such as urgency and whether adequate protections exist through other means. According to research the ESA has been very successful in helping to help these species come back. “The Endangered Species Act has been successful in increasing the number of species that are considered as being on the brink of extinction. After all, this is the largest pro of this law and also its main goal”("14 Compelling"). This is important because it is the largest argument for this topic and also because it helps species of animals that are dying come back and start to thrive again. Based on information released by the ESA they believe that knowledge is our greatest combatant against the crisis of endangered species dying forever. “One of the greatest impacts this law has had on society is the level of awareness that has been raised for animal species. Once animals are gone, they cannot be brought back. To stop this from happening, education is our best weapon. This law forces people to be aware of the environment and help naturally protect it. Actually, it has undergone several changes so that it can effectively protect our ecosystem and ensure endangered or threatened species to recover their numbers despite being at the brink of extinction at certain times.” ("14 Compelling"). This is important because it shows the population that is not possible to bring back lost species and that just knowledge of this helps out. This act shows how much it will give the human population a sense of environmental awareness. The endangered species act must be kept because it creates environmental awareness for the human population and gives them a reason to protect these
