An argument on a topic that is discussed here and there but never enough is one that should be a concern, the grading system. As someone who is a recent high school graduate and has worked hard and succeeded in school, I feel as if grades are deceitful and not an accurate enough representation of the knowledge a student has or is capable of.In an articleby www.neatoday.org,over this specific topic, article author/publisher Cindy Long, writes the article “Are letter grades failing our students?” which she discusses how certain states such as Colorado, Virginia, and Kentucky for example have decided to do away with the grading scale because it’s hurting the students. The articleon www.neatoday.orgI picked also made a very valid point, it states basically that, “In traditional grading, letter grades report the number of points earned in a subject but not very much about what the student has learned. Standards-based grading, proponents say, offers better feedback by evaluating how well students meet measurable mileposts and objectives. That, in turn, improves instruction for each individual student, and it allows the student more ways to demonstrate that they’ve learned the material before moving on.” This statement, this point, I agree with. When students see that theteacher notices what they do, how they are doing, it does not discourage the student but keeps them at the same rate, maybe even improve. To hold students to a standard based grading is a more reflective and accurate form of grading. The only concern with it all that I have is that I do not want students to feel like they are being observed and watched over like an object of study. And the article on www.neatoday.orgstates this concern as well, a comment made by Alfie Kohn, says that “standards-based grading “may even make things worse by getting kids more focused on the details of how well they’re doing –rather than being engaged with what they’re doing.”Which is my concern and point exactly, some students make “fake” they’re progress or how they act about in class just to get a good progress narrative report or some may not even learn material at all due to this fact of teachers watching how they perform. Some students tend to get nervous and feel pressured when they are being watched and
