The American Revolutionary War was a war fought from 1775-1783, also known as the American War of Independence, between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the thirteen colonies. The colonies wanted independence and free from British rule. In order to gain their independence the colonies had to fight for it.

The Revolutionary War wasn’t revolutionary because even though the British didn’t have control over the colonies, a lot of ideas and motives stayed the same. In document 6 where the African American valedictorian is giving his speech, he says he has no future because if he wants to get a job, white people won’t accept him. This was the same way they treated the slaves & African Americans when Great Britain had control over the colonies. Also in document 7 where Abigail Adams wrote about how the women should matter & not just the men. Women could not vote, be in the military, be part of government issues, be part of the government, etc.
The British assumed having a bigger population, bigger Military, and the financial backing that they could overtake the New World easily. The British and colonist both had pluses and minuses that helped and hurt them as the American Revolutionary War began. The British were already an established and strong country micromanaging world trade and regulation. The population ratio were about three to one favoring the British and recruited over 50,000 loyalist and surrounding Native tribes.

When it comes to being an American the revolutionist definitely had the right idea of what it took to be an American. According to the literature studied, the revolutionists had the strongest argument for what is meant to be an American because they fought for what they believed in and they wanted to be free from the king.

So, while some may argue that the revolution was a turning point for America, The American revolution in this case is not revolutionary since slavery was still present, minority groups did not gain rights, and British ideals and tactics were still being used in the new government. One of the crucial pieces of evidence that this “revolution” could not be considered revolutionary is because of the slavery still taking place even after the war ended. These historians claim that the war represented a real change in American social life, favored more equality, wanted more economic opportunities for ordinary people, and greater individual liberty. Therefore, the American Revolution was radical because lower class people began to own land, women gained rights, and African American’s also gained their rights.
It’s been over 200 years since the original thirteen colonies of America fought their revolutionary war against Great Britain, in hopes of achieving their independence. We shall be going through a few areas of the Revolution, such as the military, social hierarchy, the role of men and women during the war, the colonists’ values of equality and their social contract response to the British government’s abuses, and we’ll compare these areas to the present day.
