The decision of Lyndon B Johnson in refusing to call his troops during the Vietnam war even though he certainly has the power to do so was really controversial. Different scholars have different opinions and theories on why president Johnson decided to let the war continued and escalated it. The two scholarly sources that will be evaluated and examined during this paper is Indomitable Will: LBJ In The Presidency by Mark K. Updegrove (2012) and Dereliction of Duty by H. R. McMaster (1997). The origin of Indomitable Will: LBJ In The Presidency is 2012 and its author Mark K. Updegrove is an historian, an American author and the Lyndon Baines Johnson library and museum director.
President Lyndon Johnson declared a campaign to win the “hearts and minds” of the Vietnamese, and the United States decisively lost that battle. At the beginning of Truong’s book he shares what ideas are going through his heart and mind, “I would have been willing to accept almost amy regime that could achieve real independence and that had the welfare of the people at heart. I was quite prepared to give Ho’s Northern government the benefit of the doubt on this score”(36). This quote illustrates the minds of a Vietnamese population desperate for independence in any form. They had been subjected to outside imperial forces for hundreds of years prior and were poised to accept any leader willing to help them to independence.

Similarly to social tensions, political tensions must be resolved. As expressed in Country Joe’s song, Americans followed their government. Fowler’s description of Vietnam depicts different examples of his view of the country. He describes the beauty of “The gold of the rice-fields under the flat late sun ... the gold and the young green and the bright dresses of the south,” along with the darkness of the war: “in the north the deep browns and the black clothes and the circle of enemy mountains and the drone of planes. ”(Greene, 1955, p.17). I find Ho Chi Minh’s letter far more persuasive than Lyndon B. Johnson’s. Using ethos, pathos, and logos, he forms a solid argument that supports Vietnam’s stance on the war. He appeals to one’s emotions by expressing the injustices faced by his people, writing, “In South Viet-Nam a half-million American soldiers and soldiers from the satellite countries have resorted to the most barbarous methods of warfare, such as napalm, chemicals, and poison gases in order to massacre our fellow countrymen, destroy the crops, and wipe out villages.” Words such as “massacre” and “barbarous” highlight the severity of these crimes, and invoke feelings of guilt and remorse in the reader. On the other hand, North Vietnam supported the ideas of a communist economy. However, the United States’s involvement in the war caused a million of dollars and lives lost, lost of faith towards the country’s government, and divided the nation instead of uniting as one. More than three million people in the war died, and out of those three million, 58,000 were Americans. The Americans and the people in South Vietnam had fought for their beliefs of a modern Westernized country while North Vietnam had fought for a communist economy.

The Vietnam War was a war the United States should have never been involved in. The “Domino Theory” was a direct cause of the war. The war resulted in much death; innocent civilians and young Americans were killed. The Vietnam war also resulted in rioting, distrust for the United States government, and the loss of many lives. 58,000 Americans were killed and 300,000 were wounded.
Chapter 7 is focused on the approach to teach the students in a way for them to be fully engaged. the students need more focus on them and giving the students time to practice and fully grasp the in for being taught. Els need more tangible things. In later chapters the lesson was focused more on lessons that focused on knowledge rather, compared to now; the chapter is focused on meaningful learning.
