“On average 4,300 young adults are killed each year from underage drinking” (Underage Drinking Statistics). There are two different thoughts on how to alter this high statistic. The first concept is to keep the minimum drinking age at 21; the other method is to lower the age to 18. Keeping the minimum drinking age at 21, individuals would be safe from the threat of an underdeveloped brain and less fatal accidents. Keeping the minimum drinking age at 21 may be a very controversial subject but it is for the best for young adults. Their reasonable side of the argument is that if at 18 young adults can decide to enroll in the military, risking their lives, then why can they not drink legally. However, the military accepts 18 year olds because they are the most suitable candidates. They are successful candidates because they are at their best health physically and mentally. This being said they do not select 18 year olds because they are at their smartest or the most reliable and reasonable. Just because the military accepts the brave and honorable men and women who serve our country at the age of 18 does not mean we should allow 18 year olds to drink. Another argument against keeping the minimum drinking age at 21 is that is enforces unsafe drinking. Those who agree with this argument believe that since 18 year olds cannot drink legally they turn to environments where they can get away from getting caught but encourage binge drinking. Although this might be true it does not matter where they are drinking they still have to drive home and end up back behind the steering wheel of a car, endangering their and someone else’s
