When we think of the military we think of men and women fighting in a war defending our country for our freedom. But, do we think of men and women under the age of twenty one consuming alcohol while being underage? That is a topic that people have been debating since our country has been in any war. In the military drinking is part of the culture. Drinking starts on day one. In stores on base alcohol is available at discounted prices. Also, while soldiers are on active duty in Iraq it is not hard for him or her to get alcohol. I think if they are under twenty one they should have a lower blood alcohol content, also known as BAC, than one over the age of twenty one. For a person twenty one or older they can have a BAC of 0.08%, I believe that a person under the age of twenty one serving in the military could have a BAC of 0.06% and that would be perfectly okay as long as they are not causing problems. According to US Official News, “legislators also fear that since being a military member is a high stress job, it may lead to more incidents of irresponsibility and alcoholism within the ranks.” The military put a ban on the soldiers drinking in the barracks and the drinking has decreased. But that does not mean that it has stopped. The soldiers just drink more discreetly. If the military lifted this ban I think that there would be less trouble within the bases.
