My goals as of right now is to successfully pass all my welding courses at Holland College. To make as many connections as possible and get a good reputation within the welding world. I want to learn all the tricks of the trade and hopefully find a well-paying job either on Prince Edward Island or within the Maritimes to start off. Once I get myself established I wouldn’t mind either moving up in the company, doing rotations out west on the oil fields/rigs or getting into underwater welding. Underwater welding would take awhile to get into as I would need to learn how to dive and become proficient in that as well. I asked him he pros and cons of the trade and this is what he told me. Pros: would be that its one of the highest paying trades, endless amount of opportunity from getting red seal to running your own shop. You are always doing something new whether its polishing stainless or welding structural. The Cons would be that it can be supper dirty. Breathing in chemicals that are really bad for you. Its also not all welding, fit up can be the worst part of it all. It either goes well or goes completely wrong. There will always be jobs for welders whether it be on the island or within the Maritimes/Canada. Due to the fact that Prince Edward Island is a smaller province it may be harder to find a decent job here. However, I am willing to travel if need be or do rotations out west if need be. Due to the fact that Prince Edward Island is so small there wasn’t much for a job outlook for welders. Hopefully during my time at Holland College and OJT I can make some connections that will help me find a job after I get my certificate and continue my training to get my red
