An exemption for whaling The issue I choose to write about is the exemption for whaling. Due to
International law brought forward by The U.N., countries are not allowed to kill whales for any reason, whether it be for food or cultural purposes. These laws have been put in place because some countries and or members of the U.N. want to protect whales weather they are endangered or not. Norway, Japan and a few other countries would like to continue the tradition of whaling which has been going on since prehistoric times. This of course has caused tension and conflict with the U.N. I furthermore feel that one Nation or a group of Nations does not have the right to govern another country’s religious or cultural beliefs, especially when it does not hurt other people. In the beginning of Man, animals were used for food and clothing. If a certain species of Whales are not endangered, I really do not see the problem. The questions about cultural exemptions should be settled by respecting a countries culture and staying out of their business. As long as human lives are not in danger and no species are being threatened to be endangered or extinct, I see no reason to interfere. Citizens within their own country should be the only ones on the panel deciding what is best for their community. I define cultural activity as an act that is practiced which represents ones country and religious beliefs. Another example of cultural activity would be Native Americans hallucinating from peyote while praying to their gods. Most people and countries would disagree with this type of religious act but the Native Americans were doing this long before their lands were stolen. Why should a government come and dictate to a group of people how they can perform their religious ceremony? I also feel that All Whales should not be controlled by a group of people. Whales should be enjoyed by people that want to just stand and watch them , as well as, people that want to eat
