Protest Against Animal Cruelty

Introduction:
The artists Brett Murray, Sue Coe and Asher Jay all use their artworks to protest against or draw attention animal cruelty and their respective artworks greatly influenced me in how I created my artwork and drawing, as I had the same intention. For instance Brett Murray used cut outs and a combination of many objects and mediums in his collection entitled ‘Heritage’. Sue Coe used graphic and shocking imagery and repetition to show the viewer the consequences of animal cruelty and lastly Asher Jay uses very large and striking imagery to illustrate her stance against animal cruelty. All these artists depict animals in very different ways to draw the attention of the viewer and to create an emotive response from the viewer. As I hoped to create the same emotive response in my works I used these artists as inspiration in terms of medium, technique, scale and how they used the elements of art and principles of design to create such an emotive response to the subject matter.

Her artworks are dramatic and shocking, and she uses a somewhat naturalistic and somewhat stylized style in her artworks. I was not inspired by her drawing techniques for this artwork, but rather how she uses drawings to communicate with the viewer.
Namely,in her artwork Cruel: Bearing Witness to Animal Exploitation (Image A, Page 5) Coe uses repetition of certain items to emphasis her message to the viewer, for example the repetition of the money and money bags to show greed and the price animals pay for it.
