The battle between barbarian army and Roman Empire: the film stared with the fight between the Roman Empire and the Barbarian Army of German tribes. It is shown that the barbarian were attacking Roman Empire’s Northern border into Gaul for years.
The Death of Marcus Aurelius: After they won the battle Marcus decided to give his powers and to make Maximus as his heir to Maximus rather than his own son Commodus as he trusts Maximus more than his son. But he refused and told Marcus that he wanted to go to his own home. When Marcus told his son Commodus that he has already offered Maximus to be the emperor and he cannot be the emperor, Commodus killed his own father in jealousy and anger.
Maximus been arrested and the death of his wife and son: after Commodus murdered his father Maximus realized that it might have been a plotted by Commadus and he refuses to support Commodus and gets arrested. But fortunately he escaped but still wasn’t able to rescue his family as he did not reach there on time.
Slave Traders captured Maximus and was sold to Proximo: as he reached his home he saw his wife and son been hanged up which made him faint. Unfortunately he was taken by the slave traders and was taken to North Africa. Soon he was purchased by Proximo who was also a former gladiator. He met an African slave and they became friends.

The spectators roar their approval. Maximus, the anonymous Gladiator, is the hero. Commodus, followed by the boy Lucius, enters the arena to meet the victors and is stunned to discover that the the leader of Proximo's gladiators is General Maximus Decimus Meridius. Maximus threatens Commodus and would attempt to murder his enemy but the boy gets in the way. The emperor is unable to kill Maximus - the 'mob' decides who lives or dies in the arena. And Commodus needs the support of the
