Pseudoscience mimics real science and struggles to make claims that are truly scientific (Lilienfeld et al., 2015). There is a great deal of pseudoscience in the news, commercials and other sorts of media. It can be difficult to decipher between science and pseudoscience, but there are methods to help analyze the information (Lilienfeld et al., 2015). The claim chosen for this paper is “The Morpheus Clinic for Hypnosis” (Morpheus Hypnosis Ltd., 2016). Hypnosis is a state of consciousness with heightened attention and reduced awareness (Lilienfeld et al., 2015). The average person has an inability to recognize warning signs of pseudoscience found online, in the news or in other media. They are enticed by how simple the clinic makes changing your behaviour sound. The websites images, creative phrasing and videos are organized in such a professional manor that they convince the average person of their credibility. For example, in the one video the website offers, there are multiple diploma's hanging on the wall to give the suggestion that possibly these are licensed physicians making these claims (Morpheus Hypnosis Ltd., 2016). The Morpheus Clinic's professionals are so confident in their hypnosis method that it draws in anyone hoping for a solution to what they are battling (Morpheus Hypnosis Ltd., 2016). The clinic, then attempts to weaken other methods to make their own stand out as superior (Morpheus Hypnosis Ltd., 2016). Students in Introduction to Psychology are taught to look for indisputable evidence of this type of scam. Scientific studies done are mindful of the warning signs of pseudoscience such as confirmation bias, exaggerated claims and ad antequitem fallacy (Lilienfeld et al., 2015; Lilienfeld & Landfield, 2008). This fallacy explains that a claim is not always true just because it is old (Lilienfeld & Landfield, 2008). Hypnosis spans back to ancient times when Greeks visited shrines that gave therapeutic suggestions during trances (Lilienfeld & Landfield, 2008). The Morpheus Clinic claims to take the mysticism out of hypnosis, so you can achieve results here and now (Morpheus Hypnosis Ltd., 2016). People may rely on the fact that since hypnosis has been around for so long that it must work, especially if no one has proven it wrong. Taking the mysticism out does not make hypnosis any more of a real science.
