In chapter 7, I found the concept of punishment to be most intriguing. Punishment is a part of operant conditioning which was theorized by B.F. Skinner. Punishment is often confused with negative reinforcement. However, the main difference between the two is: while the goal of reinforcement is to increase the likelihood of a behavior, the primary goal of punishment is to reduce the chances of the behavior it follows. In 1938, Skinner concluded that punishment produces only temporary suppression of behavior but later research found that effects may be permanent.
Having a personal interest in understanding human nature and behavior made the subject of psychology an appealing topic to study. During the course of my undergraduate education, various specialties were considered: theories of personality, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality, just to name a few. This broad exposure to the field of psychology at Colorado Christian University has only piqued my interest further. The final class, PSY 485A Psychology Senior Seminar, covered an assortment of practical considerations such as employment opportunities for a degree holder of psychology, ethical issues, and pursuing graduate level studies.

Writing Assignment Option 4 Psychology is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the science or study of the mind or behavior.” That definition may seem vague, but it is really the only way to fully define psychology as a whole. I learned about what was normal and abnormal behavior for a child as they advance through various stages of development, and was able to use these lessons learned with my own child as I watch him grow.
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, particularly those affecting behavior in a given context. One of the most prevalent functions associated with psychology is memory. Memories are everything; without them society could not function and practically nothing would exist as it does now. Throughout the history, there have been heated discussions on what constitutes a good life. Philosophers have given different annotations on the meaning of good life based on their beliefs, perspectives or even scientific-based evidences. Some view a good life as an accumulation of material goods that brings “large amount” of pleasure to oneself. On the other hand, Mencius and Aristotle advocate good life as possessing of pleasure that incorporates ethical values and they believe that by doing so one will experience enduring happiness. There is no ultimate right or wrong for these interpretations since this is not a factual question.
Psychology is the study of the mind and each of its functions in what it does and controls. It is a scientific study on emotion, behaviour of a person and thought. The mind is investigated by analysing and observing the way it works and its mental processes. In the 1870s Wilhelm Wundt became interested in psychology and wanted to examine someone’s mind by looking at their own personal thoughts and feelings although in the twentieth century John B. Watson believed that using this method of psychology could not be proved as one person’s thoughts could be completely different to another’s. Behaviourism became the main study in psychology for the next 40 years.
