In Psych, Shawn Spencer pretends to be psychic to hide his heightened observation skills from the Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD) as he helps them solve crimes. Initially, he solved a crime while watching the story on the news, but the police didn’t believe he had solved the crime and instead accused him of committing the crime. He began faking psychic episodes to cover up his observation skills, throughout the show he tries to avoid being charged with a crime or charged with hindering investigation while still putting his “psychic visions” to good use.

When he finally brings the police in on what he knows he even says “I want . . . I want a lot of witnesses for my miraculous vision,” according the episodes transcript of the series pilot (2015). This adds to Shawn’s unrelenting need for attention by making a spectacle of himself with what he calls psychic episodes, during which he ‘sees’ things about the case, which helps create the persona of a trickster hero.
