“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Wise words articulated by Lester Fuller and Edwin Rolfe in 1944. This saying may be small but it has a huge impact on our society, seeing as we still use it 78 years later. This quote relates back to psychoanalysis. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein highlights this theme throughout the novel, as the creature is entirely judged by his appearance rather than his character. The creature's horrendous exterior led to him being shunned by society, despite his gentle and intelligent nature. He watched the family in the village and gained not only the skill of how to speak, but how to treat others. Similarly, the character of Victor Frankenstein is initially judged as a brilliant scientist, but his intentions and moral failings ultimately lead to his downfall.
