Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder in which personal, social, and occupational functioning deteriorate as a result of unusual perceptions, odd thoughts, disturbed emotions, and motor abnormalities. This disorder is interesting because it’s been found that people who have relatives with schizophrenia are more likely to develop it. Another theory is the Dopamine hypothesis saying that some people develop Schizophrenia from too much activity from the neurotransmitter dopamine. With this being said schizophrenia is not a rare disorder, and it affects many people all over the world. I believe that medication is needed to treat people with Schizophrenia. The medications that are used help eliminate the person’s symptoms that are associated with the disease. These medicines do not get rid of the problem, but they make life somewhat more bearable for the patient and their loved ones. However, these medications come with side effects, and they are called extrapyramidal effects. …show more content…

The therapist will first make a relationship with the patient and ensure them that they are loved. While in therapy the therapist helps the patients learn more about their disorder and expose them to it instead of hiding it. Also, they help them observe themselves and their relationships with the people around them. Lastly, the part I like the most is they help them cope with their stressors. In some cases, the stress or an event is what pushes people over the edge. So I feel that it’s essential to discuss the initial issue. But this still does not eliminate the symptoms, and I feel if medication was used in combination with this therapy it would be more beneficial. It’s hard to make changes in your behavior when you have thoughts and feelings that you don’t understand how to control. If medicine was used it would be made easier because it would get rid of the symptoms, and then they could only focus on the cause of the
