There are many significant events that take place throughout a person’s life, but some are so major, that they leave a psychological impact, such as attending college. Not only can attending college be rough and brutal; it can also be very beneficial –leaving its influential mark on many. Colleges and universities have allowed students to grow mentally by helping them form new ideas, beliefs, and reasoning as they enter and explore this new stage of life. Attending college is a learning experience. According to Berk (2014), “College serves as a “developmental testing ground,” a time of devoting full attention to exploring alternative values, roles, and behaviors” (p. 361). Not only does it increase our cognitive development, but it also gives students an environment where they can self reflect as they try and figure out who they are, who they want to be, and how they can achieve it. Berk (2014) states, “During college years, students develop greater self-understanding, enhanced self-esteem, and a firmer sense of identity” (p. 361). Though stressors are inevitable in the life of a college student and may seem hard at times, students should keep in mind that hard work pays off and they should continue to strive for their goals. Attending college is such a vulnerable part in a person’s life because most students have yet to achieve a sense of self; and combined with the pressures of school, it can all seem too much. Therefore, students should always have support from friends/family, advisor, or professor so they can continue to gain the tools they need to become successful in
