“Like all science, psychology is knowledge; and like science again, it is knowledge of a definite thing, the mind.” This quote by the famous American poet James Baldwin defines the word “psychology” in a simple yet powerful way. (Rathus S., 2010) Psychology is, infact, the scientific study of the human mind and its functions. Through this branch of science, an individual can understand the complexity of the human brain and understand the reasoning for typical human behavior. An individual pursuing this career may want to research additional information on psychology to make sure that this career is right for them. In 1878, G. Stanley Hall, an educator from Ashfield, Massachusetts, earned the first Ph.D. in Psychology in the United States. Five years later, he opened the first experimental psychology lab in the country. In his lab, his students were able to perform experiments that test psychological theories. With much perseverance and hard work, he went on to found the American Psychological Association. This association is the most remarkable psychological organization in the modern era. These events marked the beginnings of psychology and lead to the development and evolvement of the career. Aside from G. Stanley Hall, Wilhelm Wundt (G. Stanley Hall’s professor) is another extremely influential historical figure who introduced the career to the world. Wilhelm Wundt, a German physician, physiologist, philosopher, and professor, is known as the “father of psychology” for opening the first experimental psychology in the world. One example of a challenge would be dealing with the stress that comes with helping others. Managing the problems of other people in addition to personal problems can often affect the psychologist’s mood. It often proves to be difficult to handle and understand other client’s problems. A second challenge often presented is that sessions can last hours. This career also has its perks. Psychologists reveal that they have ample vacation time. (S. Willeke, personal communication, October 4, 2014) Another advantage to this field is the pay. Although the median wage is $69, 290, (BLS, 2014) some psychologists can make up to $100,000. The job market, according to the BLS, is typical of any other career. It is proven that the more education one has, the more job opportunities are available. Job advancement is available in this career. A local company called Staff Care in Mansfield is looking for several different psychologists. The career of being a psychologist is extremely beneficial to the society. Psychologists help people with their mental issues and behaviors and can bring peace to the mind. The subject allows people to thoroughly understand mind. It can help with decision making and avoiding stressful situations. It can help individuals so they set and achieve goals.
