Fortunately for me, I was contacted not much after about an internship at Montefiore Medical Center. They rely on the help of a human service worker in the form of case management, counseling, and medication management. Case mangers helping those with mental illness can help assess clients to see where they are at and what services they are in need of. Then they can make any necessary referrals to other agencies that may benefit the client, help the client fill out paperwork to get insurance if they don’t have any, and also help connect clients to services in their area that help them meet their daily living needs. Therapists can help diagnosis their clients, teach their clients ways to cope with their illness, and help them work through anything that may be troubling them, giving them the necessary skills to live their day to day life without letting their illness interfere with their life. Psychiatrists also help those with mental illness by prescribing them any necessary medications for their illness that will help them live as much of a normal life as possible, and that will be able to help them maintain day to day living.
These past few weeks I've spent many, many hours debating about a pretty big decision I've been trying to make. I've covered every aspect from making the better choice for my career or for my finances or how it will effect my family and friends, and I've finally decided based on what I WANT to do. So with that being said, I am happy to announce that I have accepted a full-time position as a Mental Health Assistant in Nashville at Hermitage Hall!!! A month ago I would've never imagined this happening, but it did and I couldn't be happier to start my journey with a youth residential treatment center in a few weeks!

“Karen Salmansohn once said, ‘If I had never experienced the pain I’ve gone through, I never would have become who I am today.’’’ Being molested by a family member and taking care of my baby sister were some of the challenges I have to go through and learn from. Afterward these challenges will help me to pursue my professional goals, by providing equality service in those in need regardless of their sexual orientation, face, religion, financial status, and more. Growing up, I was molested by my uncle for 9 years. Every night, I was lying in bed with tears going down my cheeks because he would get under the blanket and touched me.
I lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey ever since my family and I came here from the Philippines. I now reside in Branchburg, NJ with my husband (David), my three girls (Adriana -9, Elena – 6, Kayla – 3), my in-laws (Maria and Claudio, who will be moving to Florida in 2 years and 5months, but no one is counting), and Kivo, a 6 month old Chihuahua mix puppy. As you can imagine, we have a full, busy and noisy home, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. As far as my education goes, I attended a county college to pursue a career in Respiratory Therapy, however in my last semester in the program, I realized that path wasn’t for me.

Mental health has been around since the late 1800s, early 1900s. There were three distinctive men that change the meaning and formation of mental health care and guidance. Jesse B. Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.
Life has its twists and turns, but my overall life goal is simple, help others. I want to make an impact on others life, even if it is a small change. For instance, being able to hold a pencil is the difference between a student being able to graduate from Kindergarten and not be able to continue on to first grade. Being a Pediatric occupational therapist will help me make an impact on children at a very young age. Even small changes can have a large impacts, which is why I want to be that change for others.
