The field of human services is a very diverse field. There are many different career options for those looking to enter into the field. They can have careers as therapists, case managers, probation officers, and educational assistants to name a few. Human service workers can work with children, families, the elderly, veterans, the homeless, poor, school systems, and those that are mentally ill or have problems with substance abuse. Those pursuing a career in the field of human service workers generally all share a common interest of wanting to help others and those in need. They rely on the help of a human service worker in the form of case management, counseling, and medication management. Case mangers helping those with mental illness can help assess clients to see where they are at and what services they are in need of. Then they can make any necessary referrals to other agencies that may benefit the client, help the client fill out paperwork to get insurance if they don’t have any, and also help connect clients to services in their area that help them meet their daily living needs. Therapists can help diagnosis their clients, teach their clients ways to cope with their illness, and help them work through anything that may be troubling them, giving them the necessary skills to live their day to day life without letting their illness interfere with their life. Psychiatrists also help those with mental illness by prescribing them any necessary medications for their illness that will help them live as much of a normal life as possible, and that will be able to help them maintain day to day living. With the field of human services having many different career options and each path entailing different types of job duties and responsibilities, I chose to visit an organization that works with mentally ill children and adolescents to see what a day looked like there. They ensure that the client’s needs are met as a whole and ensure that anything they can’t provide at that organization that they make the proper referral for the client to get those services. They are also pretty standard when being compared with other agencies found in the area, they follow the same module for helping children and adolescents. The one main difference is that some of the other facilities offer one and one counseling or even treat adults as well. It would be sad to see how the community would be without services like this being offered to the youth. They are a vulnerable population that deserve a change at a happy and fulfilling
