The Dr. Larry Crabb book “Effective Biblical Counseling” is a great work for the Christian community. He explores four different approaches to integrate the Bible and counseling strategies to bring believers closer to God. Dr. Crabb has ordained the local church as a ground to have God’s people ministered to through scripture. The church must assure that all leaders are trained to a certain degree in the area of counseling.

“Nope”, the answer would slip off the tip of my tongue whenever the question, “Are you thinking of going to a Christian college?” was directed at me. By my freshmen year of high school, I felt emotionally stretched thin and constrained by the small Christian school I commuted to for 8 years. It was set in my head that I would not attend a Christian college. However, after my turbulent journey through anxiety in my freshmen year, I came to understand the importance of being part of Christian community.
I was raised as a Christian and embraced the faith for many years. During this time, I read the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, rejecting all other religions as bogus, believing that Christianity was the only true pathway to God and salvation. It was while studying at the University of the West Indies that I began to question the rationality of my beliefs. The churches that I had attended were Anglican and Missionary, and the doctrines of many other denominations were alien to me. So I invited Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons into my home and engaged them in conversations regarding their beliefs, as well as entertaining dialogue with Roman Catholics, Seventh-day Adventists, Pentecostals and others.
Like other professions in the mental health field and helping professions, counseling typically attracts those who are imbued with a need to help others, to make a difference in others’ lives, the community around them and sometimes even the world. There are many facets to a counselor and to counseling, some of which take on personal attributes such as personality, the values and beliefs held by counselors, and what they perceive their role in the counseling profession to be. Other facets involve ethical considerations in therapy, the importance of the profession, the value and process of change, important counseling practices and the value of necessary self-care a counselor ought to engage in. The role of a counselor is to act as a conduit to change and wellbeing in a client.
This perspective has convinced me that I can be used to biblically counseling others. To disciple new Christians, encourage friends and neighbors, and lead the lost to Christ. To be a small part of God’s plan to redeem a lost and dying world by pointing people to the cross and introducing them to Jesus is transforming.
