PTSD- “A mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event” (National Center for PTSD). This mental health disorder can have long lasting or have a short term affects. Terrifying events can life threatening accidents, serious injury, or sexual violence. This disorder can be triggered by a noise, smell, sounds or emotion. A terrifying event could also include a plane crash onto a deserted island, just like in Lord of The Flies. The question to be answered is whether the plane crash affected any of the kids? If they made their decisions after a traumatic experience that could have made their judgement worse than it already was? Starting off, all the boys survive the plane crash in the beginning. The boys could have lost any if not all the things they had learned before the crash and they just went flat out postal. This would explain why they had killed one of their friends with their own hands. The insanity would also prove why they were seeing ‘beasts’. Their insanity could have come from many things whether it was the crash or if it was the thought of being stranded on an island with no parents and them not knowing whether they were going to survive and go home. The main beast in The Lord of the Flies was a pig’s head on a stick. The pig’s head represents Satan. How he is deceiving, maniacal and elusive. Everything the pig says is good is deceiving to the boys. The pig could also give the boys a reason to believe they are going insane. Who is going to believe that they could be talking to a pig’s head on a stick. Just like insanity, PTSD can affect cognitive thinking; thus, resulting in poor choices or decisions. The choices on the island could have been different if the boys didn’t crash on the island. This shows that one small incident can change the course for the future. Had the plane crash not happened or happened in a less severe way the boys might have made different decisions about how they made their rules, how they planned on getting saved or how they were going to get their
